In the last few weeks, and many other times in the years I have read the Sound Off and there has been a lot of nastiness going back and forth. Right now it’s the Potsdam-Canton school merger and what I refer to as Bear-gate, for a few weeks it was motorcycle mufflers, and a few months ago it was the LGBTA Pride Parade. In other papers, the sound off is usually a place for short, maybe a few sentences or less, messages to address a minor public concern or get out some other message. It seems the purpose of the Sound Off here is to provide a place for people to make anonymous attacks relating to other people’s opinions. If you’re expressing an opinion you should at least have the fortitude to attach a name to it. If you’re just addressing that pothole outside your house then by all means use the sound off.
