If anyone does not understand how badly our public schools have and are, increasingly, glancing through most weekly collections of “Sound Offs” and hearing news on broadcast media should really clarify the situation. Most of what I see is not coherently expressed. I finished high school in 1960. My entire education to that point was barely enough to equip me to function as a citizen. After five years of college I was, truly, less literate and knowledgeable, in general, than before as a result of a so called system of education that stresses grades at the expense of knowledge, skills and other abilities. Most of those I know who had good grades passed their courses, but flunked their education badly. I am one of them. What little real education I possess came as a result of an overactive mind and through the school of hard knocks! Our nation and society is likely in it’s poorest condition since everything fell apart in the 1920’s. The real decline began during the Vietnam era when school funding began to suffer and continues to accelerate as funds for schools continue to be reduced. It could result in the destruction of our society! Schools exist for the preservation of a society. We are doing little to preserve ours.
