In reply to (“Drivers Must Yield, Sound Off Dec. 28-Jan. 3”): I think everyone is well aware of the law. The problem, and it’s a common one, are pedestrians that cross without giving vehicles ample time to yield, that don’t wait for traffic to yield before starting to cross, that don’t ensure their own safety by making sure vehicles see them and are stopped for their passage, and those that start crossing when there are moving vehicles that will reach the crosswalk before they reach the other side that may not be coming to a stop. So while we’re all aware of the law, that doesn’t absolve pedestrians of their responsibilities in regards to their own safety. Look both ways and don’t just assume traffic is going to magically come to a stop just because the law says they’re obligated to. Your safety is primarily your own responsibility and if you’re not going to be responsible for it, it’s very foolish to just assume every vehicle that you come across is going to be fulfilling their responsibilities.
