In response to “New Crosswalk” which ran in the Aug. 19-25 issue of North Country This Week: I agree. No need for the speed bump. Several years ago, St. Lawrence made a play to dramatically reconstruct Park Street as it proceeds through their campus and narrow it while slowing traffic to 25 mph. That didn’t fly so this is just the start of another attempt to worm their way to that end. Next year, they’ll have to repair it and thus put another layer on top of what is already their making things worse. Then they will lean on this precedent setting installation and make all the cross walks speed bumps. Are you beginning to see how this is going to work? This must not be allowed. Too many residents of the North Country/businesses rely on that street for unimpeded access and exit from Canton. Hindering ingress or egress will undoubtedly adversely affect traffic (commercial and county residents). Result: Good for St. Lawrence University. Not good for the rest of us. The existing crosswalks are more than adequate. I am not aware of any mishaps in recent past that point to a problem here. While pedestrian safety is paramount, and pedestrians do have the right of way, pedestrians do have some responsibility to obey laws and act appropriately. This includes stepping off the curb and making eye contact with drivers before proceeding into the street. It does not include an unabated stride into the street while walking or running and talking on a cell phone. If the powers that be still perceive too much of a pedestrian risk on Park Street, maybe the university should install some skywalks or tunnels. Then add install a fence along the street to insure pedestrian usage/compliance.
