I agree with "Taxing Times in Colton Due to Brookfield Revaluation" (Aug. 10-16). The writer brings forth many good points, especially concerning the school. Not since Joyce Monroe was the superintendent have I seen a true attempt at curbing spending in the school. Yearly, taxpayers are given the same song and dance routine from the school board and superintendent about how there are only a few things that can be cut. How about salaries and benefits? Cut some of the faculty positions. When I went to school in the '60s and '70s, I remember quite well classrooms with 30 plus students and only one teacher...and no teacher’s aides either! We all graduated, went on to college and had successful careers. How did we ever do that with so many kids in a classroom and only one teacher? Personally, with the new assessments, my school tax tripled in just this first year. My town tax more than doubled. What will we face next year? As for the whole Brookfield settlement, our town leaders gave up and threw in the towel. Certainly there were pros and cons to any settlement with Brookfield. However, I am not convinced, nor ever will be, that a total town reassessment was a necessary part of the agreement. Fiscal responsibility must become the new watchwords here in Colton.
