In response to “Village Income Tax” which appeared in the Dec. 30-Jan. 5 issue of North Country This Week: To whomever proposed an earned income tax to further tax people who work in Potsdam Village, get a clue! Number one, not everyone who works in Potsdam makes good money. Not all jobs come with good wages and benefits, but according to your proposal, anyone working in Potsdam should pay an additional tax for the privilege of working in Potsdam. Number two, many people who work in Potsdam live in other villages where much of the property is tax-exempt, such as Canton. We already pay high village taxes because there are two universities in Canton as well! And number three, like all municipalities in the North Country, the number of businesses continues to dwindle. This has more to do with shopping online because most people can't afford the boutique prices in the few village business establishments left. Wouldn't an earned income tax drive away the few businesses on your Main Street? You feel overburdened by property taxes, and bemoan the fact that good wage earners choose to live outside village limits to avoid paying village property taxes…so move out of the village!
