It has been suggested that instead of the two largest school districts merging, a large school district should merge with small school districts. Why? People move to the Canton or Potsdam area because of the wonderful education opportunities for their children. Merging the two large districts does not mean larger class sizes; it does mean even more educational opportunities. Why should the strength and progressive educational opportunities of Canton and/or Potsdam be diluted by merging with a small school district which would bring nothing to the table for Canton or Potsdam. I hate the exorbitant school taxes I pay because I live in Potsdam. I have never had a child in the public school system, but at least my school tax dollars are going to educate the kids in my community. Since Potsdam & Canton share so much, I also consider Canton to be my community. I resent my taxes, but that resentment would only increase if it were being used to educate children who do not live in my community.
