With the “so called” discussions on the merging of the Potsdam and Canton Schools, it amazes me the powers that be are trying to merge two of the larger school districts in the county. A better idea would be to merge surrounding smaller schools together with a larger one, such as Potsdam School district with Parishville-Hopkinton school district or Canton with the Hermon-DeKalb school district. Also, if there is a supposedly $35 million incentive, why couldn’t they give each school district 17.5 million and not merge? What happens after the seven-year period of the budget issue with the mergers? With the discussions continuing and nothing finalized, common sense should be the issue here. What will happen to afterschool activities such as football, basketball, baseball, etc., that the kids participate in? I can’t imagine why such an intelligent group of people would want that.
