Library budget

In response to “Library Funding Increase” which ran in the June 3 issue of North Country This Week, yes, the Potsdam Public Library is asking for money again. It has to ask every year. And yes, like people, its cost-of-living expenses continue to climb. And yes, last year’s increase was a jump, for two very good reasons. The county no longer included library in its budget, and for eight years it had gone with little increase or none at all. Last year's budget was make-up time. It's a matter of pride how well library does with what it has. Among 65 North Country libraries it ranks second in attendance. In circulation only Watertown beats it. And don't think this circulation is just books! Services like outreach programs with computers in schools are essential to tie a wide public into the information revolution, and no other agency is in line to make them happen. The library is already making it happen. We need this resource. We can't not let it go under. We'll be more than sorry if we do.
