I was watching Channel 7’s coverage of the St. Lawrence County DA race, and I saw something that (to me) was upsetting. So, you find out (unofficially) that you won an election, and the news media is there to cover the moment. Everyone is clapping and cheering, and then someone hands you a bottle of Dom Perignon, a very expensive bottle of champagne. You open it and, instead of pouring everyone a glass and allowing them to share in the moment, you immediately take a huge swig from the bottle. It was as if the candidate was saying “This is mine and you don’t get any.” The supporters were left standing there, holding their empty glasses. It might seem like a minor thing, but to me, it spoke volumes as to her character.
