Over-policing the St. Lawrence River is an excellent way to hinder tourism on what many consider to the area’s greatest attraction. I am sure many people will argue no one should be afraid if they aren’t breaking the law. However, most people would rather avoid having their vessel boarded for no reason other than a “routine inspection.” Such inspections aren’t legal on land without reasonable suspicion, a standard that is already incredibly easy to meet. For the U.S. Coast Guard, even that very limited protection against privacy invasion is tossed aside in the name of public safety. While law enforcement is necessary and serves an important purpose in responding to threats and emergencies that arise on the water, I personally do not think random boarding, inspection and interrogation will be good for the financial struggling county’s effort to promote river tourism. Nobody wants to be delayed without cause, regardless of the legality of the practice.
