In the May 18-24 issue of North Country This Week the Sound Off “Thinning the Herd” suggests that when addicts refuse to go into rehab, then it's Gods way of thinning the herd. Many people share this view, but it is deeply naïve. When addicts do not get help, they do not just wander off and die. They become desperate and turn to crime – stealing, assault, prostitution, extortion. They also become the victims of other criminals – dealers, pimps, pornographers, murderers. They destroy themselves, along with their families, friends, and communities. Some give birth to addicted babies. Others unknowingly spread HIV and Hepatitis. This is not thinning the herd, it is a human epidemic. It needs compassion, not cynicism or self-righteousness. God is not a social Darwinist. God loves us and wants us to love one another. It is time to grow up and accept our responsibilities.
