In response to the “Public Housing Smoking” which ran in the Aug. 5-11 issue of North Country This Week: How dare you? You thought because we waste our money on cigarettes we are not entitled to public housing? Cigarettes are the most addictive drug on the market. After just one cigarette some people are hooked. Some residents in public housing are alcoholics or addicted to pain medications. Should they not be allowed in public housing? Smoking is the hardest addiction to kick. If you’ve never smoked, you have no right to pass judgment. HUD is not just for the poor. Elderly people and disabled live here; but we all pay rent. Public housing is trying to ban smoking in their apartments. Elderly and disabled people that smoke will have to go out into the freezing cold to smoke. Maybe you can come up with a taxpayer subsidized heated gazebo so they do not die from pneumonia. Smoking is not a choice. It is an addiction.
