I have lived in Upstate New York since I was 4 years old and I am currently 43. My family has lived here for four generations or more. I was raised outdoors long before, the internet, home gaming systems or personal electronics. As a child I did chores for my family and made a few dollars from my grandparents for the work I did. One of my rewards other than money was my grandfather and great-grandfather teaching me how to shoot a gun. I only got to shoot a gun or go to camp after I proved I could work and be responsible, respectfully and trustworthy. I would like to share this tradition with my children. This is my heritage, the values and responsibilities that my elders shared with me. The problem is you cannot buy bullets in America. New York appears to be the hardest state to buy bullets in. At first I am angry, but then sadness takes over. There are two generations currently that will not get to know the North Country traditions of target shooting and hunting, my generation and my children. I hope that my grandchildren will know some of the freedoms that I had. I hope down state city dwellers soon realize that the majority of gun crimes are not committed by people like me or my family. America has a long history of responsible gun ownership, there are only a few that have tarnished this tradition.
