In response to “Day Care Raises,” While I sympathize with your concerns in regards to not receiving a raise from DSS, I must point out to you that the subsidy program is a reimbursement program, that means that the parents are reimbursed what the county deems an appropriate amount based on market surveys of day care programs and providers. This means the provider charges what ever they choose, above or below subsidy reimbursement amounts. Providers charge what they want. If it is more parents are responsible for the balance. If parents cannot afford rates, find alternate care that they can afford. The county only has so much money. If you have a problem with the amount of income that you are making, as business owners you have two choices, raise your rates or reduce your expenses. It is not the county’s responsibility to balance your business income. You and your wife are independent contractors. I also find the rates that DSS pays group providers more than adequate for the local economy. Be grateful for the program.
