This is in response to the article “Canton School Budget Meeting Draws Hundreds” (Watertown Times, April 8). First, there were no comments from individuals in favor of the proposed cuts. There are more people in the school district than just those with children in the sports or drama programs. To even consider a 15% levy increase to maintain all these extras is ludicrous. All extracurriculars should be cut or funded only by outside funding. No money for these programs should come from the school district. The parents can set up booster clubs to raise the money. Taxes are already too high to justify any extraneous programs being paid for with any tax increase. Schools are for children to learn, not for sports and drama. The academics taught should be reduced to what children need to graduate only. It is time that we go back to only the basics at school and nothing more.
