In response to “Irresponsible To Print Anonymous Hate Speech,” which ran in the July 8 issue of North Country This Week; while I personally like rainbow flags and find the confederate flag stupid, others evidently find the rainbow flag offensive. I cannot see the sense in their opinion, nor can I really respect it beyond simply acknowledging that everyone has a right to their opinion. Still, I am troubled when someone contends that the very expression of a dissenting view is hate speech and, moreover, that North Country This Week must implicitly endorse opinions that it publishes. In other words, the entire text of the letter is bullying and irrational. The writer says he supports freedom of speech, but how can this be possible when he doesn’t seem to understand freedom of thought?
