Regarding the front page article (“Village Seeks State help with Finances” (June 15-21): Lets see, they just gave four village department heads raises, just raised the village taxes, school taxes and now the library tax is going up, and yet in the article it says 70 percent of the village is tax exempt! Oh ya, Clarkson College, which pays no taxes and gives Potsdam very little, keeps buying property which takes it off our tax roll and quite a bit of the property they are acquiring is not being used for educational use. If they are building housing for their students, that property should be taxed. Only property that is used for education should be tax-exempt. Also, there are too many chiefs and not enough Indians. In every corporation there are too many bosses that are not needed. The village needs to eliminate positions that are not necessary and decrease the pay of some that make too much for what they are doing. I don’t understand why raises were given out when we are in a financial crisis. It’s about time the people of Potsdam stood up for our rights and stopped all this foolish spending and make our voices heard.
