How things have changed. For the better or the worse. When I was senior in high school. More specifically when I was age 17; I did not know the value of money, measurement of distance nor time. It was never considered that I vote on how to spend my parent’s money. While I appreciate everything my parents gave me I ask now has society, and in this case our children and school taken too much for granted? My senior trip was a senior skip day and many went to the state park had a picnic, swam and threw football. We had a lot of fun and even yet vivid memories of that day. 2015/16 seniors from Potsdam have voted on a trip to Florida. Now I suspect these 17-year olds also don’t truly understand money, distance nor time. Who do you think is paying the bill? Why would this trip even be offered? Tradition I have been told. Last I knew we had many in Potsdam on free and reduced lunches, those that could not afford a winter coat and teachers that donated so that all students had backpacks. Why was a more reasonable experience not encouraged so more could go? Is the trip supposed to segregate social and economic classes or be the conclusion of a group of youth that will go separate ways after graduation and perhaps never see each other again? I wish the advisors and students would have chosen a more practical and affordable senior trip. New York has many beautiful locations that I might guess have not been visited…Niagara Falls, Darien Lake, Letchworth State Park, Statue of Liberty, NYC. Students be advised: parents are not open pocketbooks and PCS staff need to be practical when continuing with tradition.
