In response to “Field of Study” which appeared in the Feb. 8-14 issue of North Country This Week: yes, many students find that their undergraduate majors are not what they end of doing as a career. But a liberal arts college is not a vocational school. Its mission is to teach how to think. It is to impart a body of knowledge essential for enlightened citizenship. I used to tell freshmen advisees to major in what engaged their enthusiasm; their grades would reflect it and future employers would train them. As a history major, my first job after the Army was in insurance. Only later did I end up teaching history.
