Elderly needs assistance

In response to “Stop All Freebies” which ran in the July 22 issue of North Country This Week: I have to laugh at the ignorance of the person putting down the meals on wheels program. Calling the elderly too lazy to prepare meals, too lazy to join social/church groups. Saying that they waste their food stamps and that they never planned for the future by saving money. That’s a pure ignorant comment. I work with the elderly. I can say all different pay scales use the program anywhere from people that have nothing, to people that have quite a bit of money. They all pay a portion based on their income. It’s not that these people are lazy by any means, some are losing their sight, memory and some can’t stand for long. Some are on oxygen and can’t be around a stove. Most aren’t able to get out to join any group. Believe me they would love to have their heath! Meals on wheels is a wonderful program. Maybe you should know what you are complaining about before you belittle something that you know absolutely nothing about.
