Is it just me, or is it dangerous to walk or drive in downtown Canton? It seems like someone gets rear-ended on the East Main Street stretch once a month. When you try to cross at Main and Park, when the crosswalk sign indicates it's safe to do so, vehicles can still turn right. I've almost been hit a few times by impatient drivers who are eager to turn and aren't paying attention, or just don't care and inch into the crosswalk while staring right at me. I get why people are impatient. It takes forever to get through town at certain times of day. A bypass has been brought up and shot down. But when sitting there in traffic, I never think to myself, "hey, let me just pull over here, find a place to parallel park, and visit one of these quaint shops sandwiched between two law offices. I can't read the sign from the street because it's small and not at all flashy (due to village regulations, I'm told), but it's totally worth attempting to park and walking on foot just to see what it might be!" No. For the sake of safety, something needs to be done, a bypass, something else, I don't care. But no more flinching as a tractor trailer barrels up behind me as I'm waiting for the train, or jumping back onto the sidewalk because the car turning right guns it into the crosswalk without looking. Make downtown Canton safe!
