I bought a new car late in 2012, and that moved my inspection date up until that month. The next year my 2013 car was due for the inspection, which I missed. We went to Florida for three months. On the way home, I was pulled over by a young female trooper. She took my paperwork after I explained what had happened. We sat on the side of the road for quite awhile. Finally, another trooper made a u-turn and pulled in behind me and in front of the other trooper's car. They talked a minute or so, then she left. The second trooper came and gave me the ticket. This was in the town of Dekalb. I decided to mail in the ticket and wait for the consequences. It came, over sixty dollars fine and over ninety dollars for court costs. My letter must have taken up a lot of court time. My point is: remember that when these diligent road patrols find something to ticket you for, you will pay for the ticket if you are guilty. You will also pay court costs, regardless if you are innocent, mail it in or appear in person.
