In response to the author of “Leave Guns at Home,” (Sound Off, Aug. 31-Sept. 6), it is my understanding that the Potsdam Police Department does not “babysit” guns for students. In fact, I would argue that these students are being intelligent and responsible. Anyone whom I have known who has brought guns with them when they return to school does so because they enjoy hunting, as do many of the local people in this area. They then, as responsible citizens, bring said guns to the PD for safe-keeping recognizing that while they enjoy going to hunt on weekends, they are not allowed to have the guns on campus for safety reasons. The impression that I have gotten from Potsdam officers is that they are happy and willing to perform this service to keep students safe and still allow them to partake in a hobby that many people in Northern New York (and other areas) enjoy. What’s irresponsible about that? I say good for the students for being honest and safe and not just hiding the guns out of sight!
