I was impressed with the many teenagers who presented their reasons for the smoking age to be increased from 18 to 21 at the St. Lawrence County Legislature meeting. The June 5 audio was just posted on NorthCountryNow.com. I hope the response from Kevin Acres, chairman, does not discourage future participation in our democratic process. I was appalled with his inappropriate comparison, saying the proposal used the same slogans as leaders in Nazi Germany, Communist China and Cambodia that killed millions. Acres also said, “I really resent one of the speakers …who said, “You need to do this. Do not take a step backward. Be a leader. I look at that as a peer pressure thing.” He then went off topic, saying the emphasis should instead be on abortion and marijuana use. I hope voters consider his comments when election time comes. He should not be chairman of the Legislature.
