Has anyone else noticed how often we're being asked to donate to charity in checkout lines lately? "Would you like to donate a dollar to..." Frankly, I'm getting tired of it. First, what proof do we have that the money actually makes it to the charity? Second, I've seen many elderly folks, perhaps on fixed incomes, look terribly embarrassed when they have to say no in front of everyone. It's nice that retail outlets want to help charities raise funds, but it seems they're doing it at our expense. In many cases, they're taking from the sick and poor to give to the sick and poor. The rich corporations don't seem to be part of the equation other than to take credit for the money raised. Until these businesses pledge to match all customer donations, I'll be donating privately, not while being "put on the spot" in checkout lines.
