I have heard and read about the controversy with St. Mary's Cemetery over the last several weeks. I decided to make this comment after a recent Sound Off that scolded Father Venette for not apologizing correctly or fervently enough. The actions of the cemetery committee have been called vindictive and desecration. Desecration has its roots in the word sacred. I feel that the root cause of this misunderstanding is the difference in what each individual person or group holds sacred or holy. The Catholic Church does not view the decorations that people have placed on your loved ones grave as holy or blessed. You do. I think everyone agrees that they are special. Gravestones were not vandalized. Special items were treated disrespectfully. Finding a balance is hard. People disagree. People apologize. I think we have to take the apology at face value and remember that ministers, reverends and priests are also human and therefore not perfect.
