In response to “Breastfeeding in Church,” which appeared in the Aug. 30 - Sept. 5 issue of North Country This Week: Biologically, breasts are designed to feed babies; it is only modern Western culture that has sexualized them to the point that their original purpose has been lost on many. Yes, breasts are generally used during sex by a lot of people. But, so are mouths and tongues and fingers, and no one has any problem exposing those in public. Breasts are not genitalia and breastfeeding is not a sexual activity. If a woman is capable of breastfeeding her baby without getting sexually aroused, then you too, should be able to witness breastfeeding without being sexually aroused. If you can’t, then look away. Simple as that. As far as the “I have sons too” comment - it’s your job to teach your children about the basics of human anatomy; If you choose not to teach your children that humans drink milk from their mothers, or that nursing is wrong, inappropriate, or disgusting, I guess that’s your prerogative.
