While the Catholic Cemetery in Potsdam has had its problems of late, on the other side of the village, at Bayside Cemetery, we too have our issues. Contrary to the posted rules and regulations at the main gate and elsewhere within the cemetery, there are those people who apparently feel they are not governed by such rules and regulations. I speak specifically of the no fishing and hunting rule. I have family buried there. I consistently put up with people fishing, drinking, playing music, camp fires burning, foul language, and yes, even nudity…every time I go to visit their grave. Discussing the matter with the sexton seems to do no good. Maybe his hands are tied? Calling the village police brings mixed results. I have seen times when they responded and simply told the people to leave, or, have been told that, "they don't enforce rules of the cemetery." It is posted against such reasons, which clearly constitute the violation of trespass, so, how does that fit into the definition of cemetery rules? These acts are clearly violations of law. It is sad to think that a family member cannot visit the grave of their loved one without having to experience the rude, thoughtless, and criminal, behavior that is so prevalent at Bayside Cemetery. I hope the cemetery board of directors will take note of this and take action to remedy this on-going problem.
