In response to the “Brake Checking” (Aug. 3-9) issue of North Country This Week: We travel the country and it is not always acceptable to travel 5 to 10 mph above the speed limit everywhere. It seems that New York state drivers typically ignore the speed limit sign and treat it as a suggestion instead. Tailgaters also tend to be shoulder lane passers also, who pass on the right side of the traffic lane when someone is turning left. This is against the law in all states but is not enforced in New York. The next time you’re following someone driving the speed limit, think about what will happen if they suddenly make an emergency stop to avoid a deer. What if that person turning left changes their mind while you’re passing on the right shoulder? Back off and be safe. We drive the roads too.
