Great news! Alcoa has committed to retain 600 jobs in Massena through the first quarter of 2019. At its surface this appears to be a good thing. Once the concessions negotiated by our elected officials have been analyzed more closely, it becomes apparent that this is going to be very costly to the taxpayers of this good state. $38.8 million from the state of New York in exchange for a pledge to keep 600 jobs through March, 2019, along with a significant NYPA power discount amounting to $30 million. These numbers equate to over $113,000 per employee. Not exactly a bargain. Per usual, Alcoa is calling the shots.
