ROCHESTER--Sophomore forward Stephanie Sayward scored her fourth goal of the season with just 2:07 to play in regulation time to lift St. Lawrence University's women's soccer team to a 1-0 win at the Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday, handing the Tigers their first loss of the season.
The Saints, who won their third straight and will take a 5-1 record into a game at Elmira on Sunday had an 8-7 edge in shots and the teams were even at 1-1 in corner kicks.
Goalkeeper Abby van Geldern made three saves, two of them in the first half, to record her fifth shutout in six games while Ashley Valenti had two saves for RIT, now 5-1.
"Without looking at the stats, RIT was clearly the better of the two teams in the first half. Their organization and possession was fantastic and they really had us back on our heels," said Saint coach Franco Bari. "We were able to make some adjustments at halftime and were much more dangerous offensively in the second half. We created some opportunities and capitalized when we needed to.
"It was a great effort and we went a full 90 minutes with an all-out effort."
