Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton men's soccer team showed great determination and effort but ultimately fell in overtime to visiting undefeated Union College (6-0-1) by the score of 3-2 Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Kangaroos to 3-4-0 on the season.
The Roos had opportunities to get on the board early. Five minutes in Nick Escalante (Whittier, CA) drew a foul and off the set piece he played a beautiful ball into the box that was headed just wide of the left post by the defense. Four minutes later off a corner Union responded with a header on goal but Evan Drew (Elizabethtown, NY) made a nice save.
The Roos got on the board first when Escalante used a hesitation move and great acceleration beating his defender down the left sideline. He crossed the ball in front where Tyler Gallagher (Potsdam, NY) corralled the loose ball and beat the keeper for the 1-0 lead.
The Dutchmen responded a couple minutes later off a SUNY Canton turnover near midfield. Dean Constant lobbed a ball up field and Drew was just a second late getting off his line as Nick Vozzella headed the ball from 18 yards out to find the back of the net and tie the game at one all.
With just less than four minutes remaining in the opening half Union collected possession in the midfield. Constant once again set up the offense as he played a pass up the center of the field to Carl Faber who beat Drew to the near post for the 2-1 lead. The Dutchmen held a 6-2 shots on goal edge and 2-1 lead on the scoreboard at intermission.
After a scoreless first 20 minutes of the second half the Roos found the equalizer in the 67th minute. Devin Gruneisen (Potsdam, NY) played a cross in front of net just six yards out where Escalante beat the Dutchmen keeper low and left to make it 2-2.
The score would hold after 90 minutes as the two teams headed to overtime. Just under seven minutes into the first extra session period the visitors would find the game-winner. Kevin Janson took a corner kick from the left end line and found Constant at the near side of the six yard mark. Constant, who caused problems for the Roos all day, redirected the ball on a header into the far side netting as a charging Drew had no chance on the well placed ball.
Union held a 7-4 shots on goal advantage in the contest. Drew made four saves in goal for SUNY Canton, while Ryan Carter stopped two shots for the visitors.
The SUNY Canton men's soccer team returns to the pitch Wednesday when they travel to take on Clarkson University beginning at 7:00 p.m.
