April Beth Dunn, former resident of Potsdam, passed away in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 12, 2013, at the age of 43.
April was born in Arcadia, California on April 11, 1970, to parents Michael and Elizabeth (Baker) Dunn. She attended schools in Monrovia, California, and in Canton and Potsdam.
Memorial Services will be held at Green Valley Methodist Church, Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 18, 2013. Final resting place will be at Salton Sea, California, at the convenience of the family.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Potsdam Elks Club, Elm Street, on May 31, 2013, at 2 p.m.
April graduated from Potsdam Central School in 1988. She served as class officer, on the yearbook staff, and as a member of the varsity club. She enjoyed playing soccer, volleyball, basketball, and softball, earning several All-Northern honors. Her senior year in high school, she was voted “Most Athletic” and received the Michael Mein award for “academic excellence and outstanding basketball achievement.” This award honors a 1964 graduate who gave his life in the Vietnam War, and is given to an exceptional athlete who intends to continue his/her studies beyond high school. April’s love of sports was demonstrated throughout her life.
After graduation, April entered the U.S. Navy and served eight years as an Air Traffic Control Officer. Her goal to become a Police Officer became a reality when she graduated from the Law Enforcement Training Academy in Austin, Texas in September, 2002. She served as a Police Officer on the Manor City Police Force before moving to Las Vegas. April was awarded the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office Life Saving Award in May, 2003.
April is survived by her daughter Taylor L. Dunn. April, “Ape,” made friends easily with everyone and will be missed by so many. While she made many of us smile and laugh through the years, her greatest accomplishment is her daughter. April was so proud of Taylor, who is beautiful inside and out, just like her Mom. Taylor graduated from the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) in Rhode Island on May 10, 2013. Mother and daughter were looking forward to being reunited for the next month. In June, Taylor begins her education at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, fulfilling a dream of April’s. Taylor carries on a long-standing tradition of military service in her family.
April is also survived by her parents, Michael and Barbara (Pharoah) Dunn, Potsdam; H. Jay and Elizabeth Lampsa, Las Vegas; two sisters, Danielle (husband Kevin) Burke, Russell; Amanda Dunn (fiancé Joe Charleson), Potsdam; three brothers, Michael (“Jamie,” wife Lori) Dunn, Las Vegas; Henry Lampsa, Las Vegas; and Stephen (wife Stephanie) Lampsa, Oklahoma; and nieces and nephews, Joshua Burke, Jason Burke, Kyle Dunn, Paige Dunn, and Lola Charleson.
April was predeceased by her grandparents, Rolland and Oma Dunn, Rome; and Woodrow and Joleta Baker, Salton Sea, California; and Rose B. Pharoah, Potsdam.
In lieu of flowers, a trust fund has been set up for April’s daughter, Taylor, to help with her education and college expenses. Donations can be sent to Michael E. Dunn, 330 Ames Road, Potsdam, NY 13676.
