(Canton, N.Y.)- Freshman Keeley Rice (Potsdam, N.Y.) pumped in six goals to go along with one assist as the SUNY Canton women’s lacrosse team lost 15-11 to Roberts Wesleyan College Thursday afternoon in Canton on Senior Day.
Graduating senior Courtney Drake (Philadelphia, N.Y.) was recognized and honored at halftime. Drake has been an integral member of the growth and success of the women’s lacrosse program the past two years. In 19 games, Drake has scooped up 13 ground balls and has 13 caused turnovers. She also made one appearance in goal last season making three saves against Oswego State.
Thursday’s game was a makeup contest from one that was cancelled back in March, when snow and the wind chill dropped temperatures into the teens. Both teams enjoyed much better conditions the second time around with temperatures in the mid 50s under sunny skies. The game progressed as several have this year for the Roos (5-7) with the home team getting off to a sluggish start but finishing with a flurry. After both teams traded goals to start the game, the Redhawks reeled off seven straight goals to open an 8-1 lead. The Roos bounced back and outscored Roberts Wesleyan 4-2 to close the gap to a 10-5 margin at halftime.
The Redhawks kept up their strong offensive play in the second half tallying the first four goals and stretching their advantage to 14-5 with 18:37 remaining.
But that’s when the Roos offense came to life, scoring five unanswered goals over a seven-minute stretch to trim the lead to 14-10. Freshman defender Kelsey Murray (West Monroe, N.Y.), Rice and sophomore Tressa Goolden (Canton, N.Y.) came up several big draw controls during that stretch that led to scores. Rice scored three of her goals during that run. Freshman Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, N.Y.) scored once on a burst down the middle, and senior Brittani Bessette (Canton, N.Y.) scored in traffic out in front off a nice feed from Goolden. But the Redhawks stymied the run wining the draw after the Roos fifth straight goal, and Ali Fox put one past SUNY Canton goalie Alyssa Altschuler (Cheshire, Conn.) for a 15-10 lead with 4:59 left. Freshman Caitlin LaVoie (Fulton, N.Y.) netted the Roos final goal off a feed out front from Rice with 1:35 left.
Goolden finished with three goals and three assists and four ground balls. Bessette ended the day with three goals. Freshman Megan Poupore (Massena, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist. Junior Brooke Knight (Madrid, N.Y.) grabbed a team-high five ground balls, and Murray finished with a team-leading five caused turnovers and two ground balls. Altschuler had 15 saves in goal.
Loren Dunn tossed in six goals to pace the Redhawks attack, and Victoria Link made 16 saves.
