Paul Piatelli went three for four, scored twice and drove in two runs and Ben Jenkins earned his first collegiate win in relief as St. Lawrence University's baseball team concluded its southern trip with a 9-7 win over Monmouth at Ft. Myers, FL on Saturday.
The win was the fourth straight for the Saints, who concluded the trip with a 5-3 record. They are scheduled to open Liberty League play with doubleheaders at Union College on March 23-24.
The Saints built a 9-5 lead in a back-and-forth game and while Monmouth rallied with two in the top of the ninth, sophomore Eric McGuire came on to induce a game-ending double play for his first collegiate save.
Monmouth scored two in the top of the first, but the Saints came back in the bottom of the second as Piatelli doubled and Brian Magovney walked. Ethan Braddock then delivered a two run double to left to tie the game. Carter Franz singled, Khifer O'Connor doubled and Jeff Kott delivered a sacrifice fly to give the Saints a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third.
Monmouth went back on top with two in the fifth against starter Kevin Prindle, but Jenkins shut them down to get out of the inning and the Saints came right back with three in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead. With one out, O'Connor walked and Kott singled. Both moved up on a wild pitch before Piatelli scored them with a double and Piatelli came around to score on Zane Fish's single.
Monmouth cut it to 6-5 with a run in the top of the sixth, but the Saints scored one in the bottom of the seventh on Kott's single, a walk to Piatelli, a sacrifice bunt by Magovney and Fish's sacrifice fly and added two in the eighth when Chris Fernandez and Bryan Palermo hit back-to-back singles to lead it off and Franz delivered a sacrifice fly and O'Connor a run-scoring single to make it 9-5.
