(Lakeland, Fla.)- The SUNY Canton baseball team crafted a late-game rally but came up short as they lost to Gwynedd-Mercy College 9-5 on Sunday in Lakeland, Fla.
SUNY Canton (0-3) fell behind 5-0 to the Griffins after 3 ½ innings, and finally got on the board with one run in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Jordan Hunneyman (Redwood, N.Y.) singled and eventually came around to score on an RBI-single by senior Tom Darling (Oswego, N.Y.).
Gwynedd-Mercy stretched their lead to a 7-1 margin with two more runs in the top of the sixth, before the Roos rallied with two runs in the next two innings to pull within 7-5.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Griffins recorded two quick outs but SUNY Canton battled back with three straight singles from freshman Kyle Sacks (Clifton Park, N.Y.), sophomore Chris Jones (Deerfield Beach, Fla.), and freshman Greg Dobies (Schenectady, N.Y.), and then a two-run single from freshman Eddie Morel (Lake Worth, Fla.). In the bottom of the eighth, Hunneyman singled followed by a walk from freshman Kevin Hill (Deerfield Beach, Fla.), and then both players advanced a base on a passed ball. Darling delivered a sacrifice fly to centerfield for his second RBI that plated Hunneyman, and Sacks brought Hill home on an RBI-groundout to second base to pull the Roos within two runs. Jones then reached on an error but was caught stealing to end the inning.
Gwynedd-Mercy tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth, and then forced the Roos into three straight groundouts in the bottom half of the inning to close out the game and secure the win.
Freshman Khalil Bratton (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) struck out four batters and allowed seven runs on seven walks and six hits in seven innings of work. Junior Bryce MacDonald-Wilson (Gasten Passage, Novia Scotia) allowed one run and one walk in one inning, and sophomore John Mancini (Scotia, N.Y.) gave up one run on one hit in one inning.
The Roos are next in action on Monday, Feb. 25 with a single afternoon game against Farmingdale State College at Lake Myrtle Park Field #1.
