Elizabeth M. “Betty” Smith, 87, Massena, passed away Thursday, Feb. 21 at Massena Memorial Hospital.
Betty was born May 8, 1925 in Norfolk, the daughter of the late Victor and Margaret Freeman Tooley. She attended school in Norfolk.
She married Lloyd G. Smith May 1, 1945 at the Massena First United Methodist Church with Rev. Leslie Potter, officiating. Mr. Smith predeceased her January 22, 1976.
Betty first worked at the St. Regis Paper Company in Norfolk and also as a clerk at the Fabric Shop in Massena. She later went to work for the St. Regis Nursing Home, where she continued for 25 years until her retirement.
Betty was a woman who lived everyday of her life by the principles of the greatest generation. She was a private person, devoted to her family, and loved cooking wonderful meals for her family and friends, including her signature pies.
Betty was active with the local Sweet Adelines and loved various crafts, including, making stuffed bears.
Betty is survived by her three children and their spouses, Philip and Gerri Smith of Cortland, David and Lisa Smith of Massena and Nancy and Thomas Rickard of Pennelville; her grandchildren, Eric, Erin, Alicia, Stephen, twins Tirzah and Krystin, Victoria, and Julianna Smith; 3 great grandchildren; her brother, Paul Tooley of Syracuse and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son, Wayne Smith November 10, 1957; three sisters, Patricia Furgison, Felicia Pike and Carolyn Ruland and her brother, Robert Tooley.
Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Bixby Cemetery, Norfolk in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Massena Rescue Squad or Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.
