Emily J. Burcume, 84, Canton and formerly Hannawa Falls, passed away on Friday, January 25, 2013 at the home of her daughter, Sharon, in Macomb, while under the care of St. Lawrence Valley Hospice.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. at the O’Leary Funeral Home, 5821 US Hwy 11; Canton, with Rev. Leon Sweeney, officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until the time of the service.
Surviving Emily are a son, Thomas Burcume and wife Barbara of Hannawa; daughter Sharon Perry and companion Bruce Reynolds of Black Lake; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Also surviving are brothers, Merton Hance of Ogdensburg and Berton Hance of Stockholm; sisters, Barbara Planty of Parish; Judy Chenail of Ocala, FL and Roselda LaDeuc of Quebec.
She is predeceased by brothers, Silas and James Hance; sisters Agnes Savage, Elsie Tessier, Pauline McMartin and Maribelle Locke; by a grandson, Lew Rodney Norman and a great-grandson Zachary Patchin.
Emily was born Feb. 17, 1928 in Russell, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Rose Mae (Davis) Hance. She attended Russell schools.
On August 3, 1946 she married Raymond J. Burcume at the home of his parents in Massena. The marriage was blessed on Oct. 8, 1954 at St. Mary’s Church in Canton by Rev. John Whittaker.
The couple lived in West Potsdam where they operated a dairy farm before moving to Hannawa in 1974.
Emily worked at Potsdam State Teachers College as a short order cook for the faculty in the early 60’s.
Emily enjoyed crafts and many different things.
