(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men’s basketball team dropped a close 61-58 decision to the University of Maine at Presque Isle Sunday afternoon at Roos House.
Junior Khalid Vaughn (New York, N.Y.) led three SUNY Canton players in double figures with a game-high 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Scott Bartenstein (Potsdam, N.Y.) scored a season-high 11 points, 10 in the first half, and grabbed six rebounds, and senior Ryan Lamica (Constable, N.Y.) added 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.
The Roos fell into a 9-0 hole to start the game before Bartenstein canned one of his two 3-pointers and followed with another jumper that trimmed the lead to 9-5. The Owls stretched their lead to a 10-point advantage before the Roos clawed back to close the gap to a single point at 28-27 with 5:38 left. SUNY Canton outscored the Owls 12-10 from there on out and took a 39-38 lead into the locker room.
Presque Isle scored on their first offensive possession of the second half after the Roos misfired twice to regain the lead for good. The contest remained close for the rest of regulation as the Owls didn’t build more than a six-point lead and the Roos came within one point six different times but couldn’t get over the hump missing four shots in the final minute of play. The Roos had one last chance to send the game into overtime but a three-point attempt by Lamica at the buzzer just missed the mark.
Sophomore Tyler Ellison (New York, N.Y.) grabbed 11 rebounds and added eight points for SUNY Canton (3-9) and Scott Dixon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) contributed five points, five rebounds and two steals.
Michael Warner led the Owls with 17 points and four boards and Patrick Manifold added 16 points, four rebounds and three blocks.
SUNY Canton is off until next weekend when they travel to Vermont to play Vermont Technical College on Friday, Jan. 11 and the College of St. Joseph on Saturday, Jan. 12.
