The St. Lawrence Health Initiative has teamed up with the Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work and Play project to support physical activity.
Americans have become less physically active over the years, contributing to chronic diseases including heart disease and diabetes.
Community leaders can take measures to encourage physical activity in local neighborhoods, according to the health initiative. Government officials can pass local ordinances that encourage “complete streets,” or streets that can be used by others beyond vehicle traffic. Traffic strategies can also be designed to make community streets safe for recreational use.
The project will award a maximum of $15,000 for “completing the streets” to support physical activity. Two St. Lawrence County municipalities will receive $7,500 each to aid “complete streets” policy development and traffic strategy implementation.
The deadline to apply for a grant is 4 p.m. Jan. 25. Grants will be awarded Feb. 8.
