Mr. Robert D. Wilkins, 86, of 31 Grove Street, peacefully passed away Friday afternoon, November 30, 2012 at the St. Regis Nursing Home, after a lengthy illness.
Bob was born September 2, 1926 in Norwood, the son of the late E.J. and Emma Drew Wilkins. He graduated from Norwood High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he honorably served his country. After returning home, he entered Clarkson College under the GI Bill, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1948. Later that year, on October 16th, he married Cathern “Kay” Popple, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in a double ceremony with her sister, Helen and Kenneth Smith. Kay predeceased him on May 9, 1991 while living in North Carolina.
Bob worked for Alcoa, first in Massena as an Electrical Engineer before becoming the Plant Manager at the plant in Badin, North Carolina. He continued his working career there until his retirement. After moving back to Massena, he and his son operated Dad and David Lawn Care for many years. He was an avid lifelong golfer and belonged to the Raymondville Golf and Country Club. He was also an avid supporter of Clarkson Hockey.
He is survived by his daughter, Katherine Blair of Massena; his son, David Wilkins of Massena; and a special nieces and caregiver, Bethellen Murray of Massena.
Friends may call Tuesday 12:30 – 2:00 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where a prayer service will be offered at 2:00 PM. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Norwood.
