MASSENA – Mrs. Mary Helen McKillop, widow of Mr. Dewar McKillop, age 100, passed away on Thursday, August 12 at the Massena Memorial Hospital, after falling on Monday evening.
She was born June 15, 1910 in Owls Head, New York, the daughter of Almanzo and Minnie Kelley Childs. She attended Franklin County Schools. After her married to Dewar McKillop on October 27, 1937 in Massena, they moved to Massena, where she was a resident throughout her life.
Predeceased by her husband on June 15, 1949, a son, James on January 20, 2008, 2 sisters, Doris Barber and Louis Childs, and a brother, Harold Childs; she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Eleanor and John K. Russell, of Shelburne, New Hampshire. Also surviving are 2 grandchildren, Amy True and her husband, Christopher of Sykesville, MD; John D. Russell and his wife, Dorie of Honeoye Falls, New York; four great grandchildren, Sarah and Stephen True and Molly and Benjamin Russell; as well as many nieces and nephews.
An active member of the First United Methodist Church, she belonged to the Women’s Society of Christian Service, working many years on church suppers and fairs. She also was a member of the Massena Senior Citizens. She also belonged to the Rebekah Lodge and the Grange at one time. Her work experience has always been as a caregiver, whether her children or the elderly; in whatever capacity, always sought out people that needed help.
After many years at the Victory Apartments, she became a part of the enriched living program at Grassmere Terrace. On her recent, 100th birthday, she enjoyed and appreciated all the festivities and greetings.
There will be no calling hours. A Memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, September 11th at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be held privately in Pine Grove Cemetery, Area 2, Massena. Arrangements are with the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena.
