Mr. Michael J. Francia, Jr., 80, of 38 Washington Street, passed away early Monday morning, September 17, 2012 at Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, where he had been a patient since Thursday.
Mike was born February 18, 1932 in Massena, the son of the late Michael J. Sr. and Blanche Greenbush Francia. He attended Massena schools. He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. On May 2, 1959, he married Irene D. Trombly in Churubusco. She predeceased him on May 24, 1982.
Mike worked for Laborer’s Local #322 at Alcoa, retiring in 1987. He also worked on the construction of the Seaway. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church; was a member of the Earl J. Santimaw VFW Post #1143 and the American Legion Post #79. Mike truly enjoyed fishing, boating, and spending time on the St. Lawrence River. He loved to watch the sunsets, feeding the birds, and was a huge fan of Yankees baseball. Of all his enjoyments, his greatest was taking care of his oldest great grandson, “The Worm.”
He is survived by his children, Diane and Anthony Major of Norfolk and Daniel and Carol Francia of Miramar, Florida; his grandchildren, Amanda, Danielle, Christine, and Steven; and six great grandchildren.
There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday 3:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. Scott D. Fobare, celebrating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Massena.
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley.
