OGDENSBURG -- The Greater Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce met recently to rework their old Ford Street Committee and give it a new name.
The new Gateways and Corridors Committee will expand on the scope of their efforts and will include State Street, Main Street, Canton Street, Fine Street and New York Avenue. Paterson Street was not included since it will be under construction next year.
The mission statement of the committee remains essentially the same: Encourage residents, business owners, and the City of Ogdensburg to improve the appearance of gateways and corridors so that they attract visitors, potential homeowners and investors.
Last year the committee was successful in joining with the city to install signs at the entrances to Ogdensburg, directing people to the downtown area in an effort to stimulate business along these corridors. Corning agreed to a large landscaping project at their property fronting on Ford Street. All materials, design and labor were contracted locally.
The city expanded the scope of their LWRP (Local Waterfront Redevelopment Plan) to include Ford Street.
The chamber instituted a rewards and recognition program which honors a business and a homeowner for improving their property. One homeowner and one business are selected by the committee to receive this recognition and to display the large award sign in front of their property.
For August 2012, the committee chose the residence at 920 Ford Street, owned by Deborah Aldrich.
The business chosen is United Helpers Management Company, for their new signs at their two gateway locations, their Riverledge facility on Route 68 and at their management office at 732 Ford Street. In addition to the new signs, they have restored the wide veranda on the side of one building.
The committee would like to hear from the residents of the city regarding their nominations for residences and business that have improved their appearance.
