Price Chopper, which operates five stores in St. Lawrence County, says that none of the fresh ground beef it sells contains “pink slime.”
In response to ongoing consumer and media questions about the presence of “pink slime” in local supermarket meat, Price Chopper endeavors to reassure consumers that Price their fresh ground beef does not include these products or any other fillers.
A recent television exposé revealed that many supermarket chains mix lean finely textured beef (LFTB) or boneless lean beef trimmings (BLBT), sometimes referred to as "pink slime," into their ground beef.
“Price Chopper is proud to confirm that we do not,” said a statement from spokeswoman Penny Vavura.
“Despite the fact that this processed and then frozen beef is USDA-approved and can legally be added into fresh ground beef without having to be called out on the label, it fails to meet our ‘fresh’ (or ‘Best in Fresh’) quality standards,” she said.
The supermarket chain emphasizes that their ground beef “NEVER contains any fillers, additives,” including the pink slime compononets.
“Additionally, all of the branded packages of fresh ground beef that we sell, whether organic or not, are also void of fillers, additives, LFTB and BLBT."
In St. Lawrence County, Price Chopper operates stores in Canton, Potsdam, Massena, Gouverneur and Ogdensburg.
