Graveside service for William A. Stone, 83, Canton, will be held on Wednesday, June 9, at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waddington with Rev. William Hart, officiating. Mr. Stone passed away on Thursday, June 3, at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
Friends may call at the O’Leary Funeral Home in Canton on Tuesday, June 8, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Surviving Mr. Stone are five sons, John Stone and wife Cindy of Dallas, TX, Robert Stone of Rochester; Sam Stone of Colton, Matthew Stone of Canton and Joe Stone and wife Shirley of Canton; daughters, Monica Stone of Canton, and Maria Stone and companion Paul Pavel of Cape Vincent; ten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
William was born on September 20, 1926, in Waddington, son of the late Leslie and Jennie (Veitch) Stone. He attended Waddington Schools and entered in to the United State Army in January of 1945. He served in WWII during the Pacific Theatre and was discharged in April of 1947. On October 28, 1947 he married Rita Oshier at St. Mary’s Church in Waddington. Mrs. Stone predeceased him on July 1, 2005.
Mr. Stone owned Stone’s Grocery in Waddington during the building of the Seaway. He drove tractor trailer coast to coast for GLF Trucking and worked at Canton College for 20 years in the maintenance, retiring in 1989.
William was a member of the Rainbow Club, Quebec Brook Club, Canton VFW Post 1231 and Potsdam American Legion Post 74. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and four wheeling.
