
Wayne Reed, Jr., age 84, of Newton Falls, passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at the Clifton-Fine Hospital.
Wayne was born on October 13, 1927 in Russell, NY to the late Wayne and Mayfred (McCollum) Reed Sr. He graduated from Knox Memorial High School in 1944. He continued to attend Knox Memorial as a post graduate for an additional six months so he could play baseball.
Wayne served his country proudly, enlisting in the United States Army in June 1950, where he was assigned to the 5th Regiment 1st Calvary Division. He fought in the Korean War until his honorable discharge in September of 1952. Wayne worked as a coater operator at the Newton Falls Paper Mill for 40 years, retiring in June of 1989.
Wayne married Joan M. Pomerville on March 15, 1952 in Star Lake. They resided in Newton Falls where they raised their family together. They were avid Pinochle players. Joan passed away on February 3, 2005. Wayne enjoyed hunting, playing baseball and continued to be an avid New York Yankees fan.
Wayne is survived by a daughter, Diane Crespo of Jeffersonville; four grandchildren, Matthew Reed, Syracuse, Elizabeth Reed, Boston, MA, Anthony Reed, Wanakena, and Heather Gebhardt, New Haven, Conn; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his wife, Joan, Wayne was predeceased by a son, Paul Reed; and two daughters, Linda Merring and Suzanne Pitcher.
There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 14th at 11:00 a.m. in the Cranberry Lake Cemetery with Deacon Phillip Giardino officiating.
