MASSENA – Viola M. Pelkey, 83, of 13 Owl Ave., passed away Saturday, October 26, 2013, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She had been in failing health for the past two years.
Viola was born April 17, 1930, in Massena, daughter of the late Lawrence A. and Ida Hardy Barton. She attended Massena Central School, and on May 17, 1947, she married Winfred "Manny" Pelkey, at Sacred Heart Church, with Father Michael Jarecki, officiating.
She worked at the Village Inn and Hebert’s Steak House as a waitress and cook, and as a receptionist at the Doctors Clinic, and finally at Wal-Mart as a people greeter. Her passion was cooking, but she also enjoyed camping and traveling, and working on crafts. She also enjoyed bingo, bowling and going to the casino. Viola was a member of the Ladies Auxillary VFW, and the Ladies Auxillary AMVETS, and was a member of Bethel Assembly of God Church.
Viola is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Manny; her sons, Lawrence Arthur and Wanda Pelkey, Hannawa Falls, Jerry Winfred and Valerie Pelkey, Brushton, Gary Edward Pelkey and his fiancée Sue Patton, Massena, and Eric Scott and Trisha Pelkey, Spencerport, NY; her daughter, Pamela Jean and Steven Fournier of Massena; ten grandchildren, Jason, Kevin, Brian, Kimberly, Nicholas, Samantha, Thomas, Kayla, Ashlee and Zell; 12 great-grandchildren, soon expecting her 13th and a sister, Evelyn Prue, Malone, NY.
She was predeceased by her brother, Jerry Lawrence Barton.
Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Tuesday 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m., where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday, at 10:00 a.m., with Pastor Theresa Shear officiating. Burial will be at Massena Center Cemetery, Massena.
