Louise Gebhard Haskins, 94, Canton. Louise Gebhard Haskins, 94, daughter of Bertha Richert and Leslie N. Gebhard, and a resident of the United Helpers Nursing Home in Canton, passed away Nov. 9, 2009. A family memorial service will be held in the summer of 2010.

Surviving Louise is a son, David R. Haskins; two daughters, Natalie H. Matott and Lynne H. Matott; 19 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband, Elmer Haskins; her daughter, Cynthia A. Culley and her grandson, Anthony Matott.

Louise was born June 1, 1915 in Everett, MA. She graduated with a B.A. from the Massachusetts School of Art in 1935. She married Elmer Haskins in 1936; they had four children. The family moved to Potsdam in 1955 and Louise remained there for the rest of her life.

Besides raising her four children, Louise was an active member of the Potsdam Central School board for 17 years and she volunteered her time for many activities associated with the First Presbyterian Church of Potsdam.

She was an avid traveler and enjoyed exploring the outdoors from the local Adirondack park region to places abroad such as Scotland and England. She was a dynamic woman, as only a fiercely indomitable spirit coupled with over 90 years of life experience can yield.

Through her work as a mother and grandmother, she instilled a sense of pride for her German heritage and fostered a legacy of values that her family is proud to carry on with today.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sandstoner Foundation: Attn: Ellen Hayes, P.O. Box 264, Potsdam, NY 13676

Arrangements are with the Seymour Funeral Home in Potsdam.
